Sir Elton John's marriage to David Furnish has got "better and better"

The 'Tiny Dancer' singer tied the knot with the 54-year-old filmmaker in 2014 after over 20 years together, and though they have had their "ups and downs", they are both committed to putting in the effort to make their relationship work.

Elton said: "[Our relationship has] gotten better and better and better.

"We've had our ups and downs like every other couple.

"Our love has grown stronger and stronger. And you have to work at it, you know you're married."

And the 69-year-old singer thinks the couple's two sons, Zachary, six, and four-year-old Elijah, have only served to strengthen his and David's relationship.

He told Beats 1's Zane Lowe: "[Having children] makes all the difference because it's about them not you. And it's the greatest thing you'll ever know."

Elton didn't initially want to have children, but now that he has his sons, he only wishes he was younger so he and David could add to their brood.

He continued: "People say, 'Well, I disagree I don't want children' and that's fine, I would have said the same thing, until I had them. Then it was like 'Wow this is it? Are you kidding me?' If I was 15 years younger, I'd have two or three more. Without question."

Elton turns 70 on Saturday (25.03.17) and he insists he is looking forward to the milestone.

He said: "Some people don't like birthdays, they don't like celebrating, they don't want to know about them, and I've always enjoyed my birthday.

"Seventy sounds so archaic doesn't it.

"When I was growing up, 70 sounded like the end of the world. But things have changed, you're only as old as you feel inside."

While the 'Nikita' singer will be celebrating in style at the weekend, the plans for the bash have largely been kept "secret" from him, but all proceeds from the party will be donated to the Elton John AIDS Foundation and the Hammond Museum.

He said: "I just know that it's a celebration of my 70th and the 50 years of partnership with [collaborator Bernie Taupin] and myself.

"It's a great year this year, it's the 25th anniversary of the AIDS foundation, 50 years of Bernie and me, and 70 years of me. It's nice to celebrate things. Life is fabulous."
