    St Andrew's claim maiden Maadi Cup win

    St Andrew's College have won the prestigious boys eights title at the Maadi Cup secondary schools rowing regatta, while Diocesan School also prevailed.


    St Andrew's College have won an all-Christchurch duel to clinch the most prestigious prize in New Zealand secondary school rowing on Lake Karapiro.

    A late burst carried St Andrew's to victory over nearest challengers, Christ's College, to win the boys eight final.

    While Christ's College had won the Maadi Cup 11 times previously, it was a maiden title for St Andrew's, who also won the boys four earlier in the week.

    Bronze went to Hamilton Boys High, overall the most successful school on a points basis across the week-long regatta.

    Auckland's Diocesan School for Girls defended their senior girls eights title, also using powerhouse finishing speed to see off St Margaret's College of Christchurch.

    Ashburton College student Veronica Wall matched her achievement of last year by winning four gold medals, including the under-18 single sculls crown.
