'Get Out' leads the nominations at the MTV Movie & TV Awards with six

The horror film - which was directed by Jordan Peele - is up for gongs including the coveted Movie of the Year, while its star, Daniel Kaluuya has scored a hat-trick of nods and will contest for Best Actor in a Movie, Next Generation and Best Duo along with his co-star Lil Rel Howery.

Movie of the Year is set to be a hotly-contested category, with 'Beauty and the Beast', 'Logan', 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' and 'The Edge of Seventeen' also up for the accolade.

Following behind 'Get Out' in the nomination stakes are TV show 'Stranger Things' and live-action Disney remake 'Beauty and the Beast' with four each, while 'Atlanta', 'Game of Thrones', 'Logan', 'Moonlight', 'Hidden Figures' and 'This Is Us' have all scored three nods.

The newly-updated ceremony - which was previously known as the MTV Movie Awards but has now been expanded to honour television programmes and stars - has seen a number of rule changes, including having non-gendered categories such as Best Hero and Best Villain, as well as Best Actor in a Movie, which will see the likes of 'Get Out' star Daniel, Emma Watson, Hugh Jackman, Hailee Steinfeld, Taraji P. Henson and James McAvoy do battle for the prize.

Although there are some specific categories for movies and TV shows, others such as Best Kiss, Tearjerker and Best Comedic Performance will mix up nominees from both mediums.

New categories added to the awards ceremony includes Best Host, Best Reality Competition, Best American Story - awarded to the programme or movie that shows the US at its best, open and diverse - and Best Fight Against the System, which is awarded to the project that show characters rallying against a system that tries to keep them down.

The awards show, which will be hosted by Adam Devine, will take place on May 7 at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium.
