Man charged after woman dies near Taupo

A man has been charged with murder and will appear in court after a woman was stabbed and died on the way to hospital.

A 56-year-old man is facing a murder charge after a woman suffering from stab wounds died on her way to hospital.

Emergency services responded to a report of a stabbing at a property in Mahuta Road at Five Mile Bay, near Taupo, about 8.30am on Saturday, says Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Van Kempen.

The 58-year-old woman was being flown to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition when she died.

Police have arrested the man and are not seeking anyone else.

He has been charged with murder and will appear in Rotorua District Court on Monday. He remains in custody.

A scene examination is being carried out and CIB is making a number of follow-up inquiries as well as providing support to the victim's family.
