Man killed in Methven crash named

Police have named the 25-year-old man killed during a motorbike race in Methven.

Police have named the man killed during a motorbike race in the South Island town of Methven.

Twenty-five-year-old Christchurch man Ruaraidh McLeod died at the scene of the crash during the Methven Mountain Thunder Motorcycle Street Race on Saturday.

Police on Sunday publicly named him and said the incident was being investigated by the coroner.

Mr McLeod was a competitive junior track cyclist who won silver in the 4000m team pursuit at the 2009 Australian Youth Olympic Festival and placed fourth in the 300m individual pursuit at the UCI World Junior Track Championships the same year.

During the Thunder Motorcycle event, racers from across New Zealand travel at speeds up to 200km/h around a tight 1km circuit, completing laps in 32 to 34 seconds, according to its website.

Nelson man Guy Lowe died on the way to hospital after crashing his bike while riding in the Greymouth Street Races during Labour Weekend last year. A second person was injured in a separate crash at that event.
