    Mostert rebounds from Supercars letdown

Chaz Mostert says his team is happy to fly under the Supercars radar but isn't living in the shadow of cashed-up entrants DJR Team Penske.

Prodrive ace Chaz Mostert says returning to his 'happy place' has him well placed to rebound this weekend at Phillip Island after being left gutted by his last Supercars drive at Symmons Plains.

Mostert was on track for a drought-breaking win in Tasmania before a driving error allowed rivals DJR Team Penske to slip in and score a historic one-two result.

For Fabian Coulthard and Scott McLaughlin, it was a euphoric day, but Mostert was left fuming at throwing a victory away.

"I was gutted. I know how hard the team has been working in background and I was gutted for them," he said.

His response? - head for the Mountain.

Mostert drove in the Bathurst 6 Hour on his weekend between Supercars meets, at the site of his groundbreaking 2014 success in the 1000km classic.

He earned second place in a Ford Focus and said the drive helped to clear his head for a return to Supercars.

"It was good to get rid of that memory," he said.

"You're only as good as your last race and, my last race, we did well. And it's never a bad time to race at Bathurst.

"The Supercars races these days, every lap is a qualifier. You make one little mistake in tricky conditions and, instead of dropping one place, you drop six or seven.

"We'll be making sure not to repeat that on Phillip Island."

From the looks of things on Friday, the trip to Bathurst did the trick.

Mostert was fastest at the Victorian circuit, setting a new lap record as he became the first Supercars driver to crash through the 90-second barrier.

The 25-year-old is in the frame to tackle favourite McLaughlin - third quickest on Friday.

The Kiwi scooped the meet last year and earned four wins across the last eight races in Volvos for Garry Rogers Motorsport.

While most Supercars' observers are tipping a Red Bull Racing v DJR Team Penske dual for the championship, Mostert believes he and teammate Mark Winterbottom can be in the title mix.

"We're not in the shadow of anyone. We're our own team," he said.

"There's a lot of focus going on what people call goliath teams fighting out for the championship but we're definitely in the mix with the improvements we've made.

"We'll keep going under that radar. It's where we like to be."
