    Another cancelled launch for NASA balloon

    The seventh attempt at launching NASA's super-pressure balloon from Wanaka has been cancelled because the balloon would have flown over the North Island.


    NASA's seventh attempt to launch this year's super-pressure balloon from Wanaka has been cancelled because they didn't want it flying above the North Island.

    The planned launch of the balloon, which inflates to about the size of Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium, was called off on Saturday morning.

    NASA scientists believed the forecast winds wouldn't be helpful.

    "The projected flight trajectory had our balloon climbing out over the South Island and then onto the North Island on a path that was unacceptable for launch," a spokesman said in an email.

    The team is assessing whether Sunday morning will be suitable for another launch attempt.

    NASA is hoping the test research balloon will set a record by flying for 100 days at more than 33km above the earth.

    It has scheduled the launch of the stadium-sized balloon at the airport seven times in recent weeks, but has called each off when weather conditions weren't right.

    It's the third year NASA has been in Wanaka to launch a balloon. The first balloon in 2015 achieved 32 days of flight, while 46 days was notched up in 2016.
