Laser sailor Meech solid at World Cup

Kiwi sailor Sam Meech has made a decent start to the Hyeres World Cup, his first regatta since claiming an Olympic Laser bronze medal.

Olympic Laser class bronze medallist Sam Meech has made a sound start in his return to the water at the World Cup regatta in France.

Meech is 11th in a 60-boat fleet at Hyeres after the opening two races, crossing the line 26th and sixth.

The regatta is the first for Meech since he finished third at the Rio Olympics last August, having undergone knee surgery in December.

He sits two places behind compatriot Andrew McKenzie, who was ninth and 18th on Tuesday.

Pavlos Kontides of Cyprus won both races to make an early statement while Olympic champion Tom Burton of Australia is third.

New Zealand is fielding a small contingent at the week-long regatta.

The other notable performers on day one were Olivia Mackay and Micah Wilkinson, who are 13th in the Nacra 17 class.
