Waikato on top of NPC table

Waikato back on top of NPC table after 25-16 win over Ak- results from NPC second and third divisions

    28 September 2002
Waikato is back on top of the NPC table after a hard fought 25-16 win over Auckland in Hamilton today.

Both teams ran in two tries but the difference was the boot of David Hill who kicked five penalties.

Waikato looked like it was going to run riot after it scored a try five minutes into the game and dominated most of the first half.

However Auckland got its defence together and restricted Waikato's scoring to penalties for much of the game, while scoring one try at the start of the second half.

It wasn't until the last five minutes of the game that both sides were able to cross the line again.

For Waikato Regan King and Bruce Reihana scored tries while David Hill kicked five penalties.

Ilisea Tunivula and Brent Ward dotted down for the visitors and Carlos Spencer slotted two penalties.

Waikato led 14-6 at the break.

In today's results from the NPC second division... Nelson walloped Thames Valley 49-18, Counties downed Marlborough 34-15, Hawkes Bay beat Manawatu 32-10 and Mid-Canterbury toppled East Coast 38-19.

In the third division... North Otago had a 49-32 win over Poverty Bay, King Country overcame Buller 31-18 and Horowhenua-Kapiti beat West Coast 29-20.
