Body recovered from ute in Waikato lake

Police have declined to rule out foul play following the recovery of a body in a ute from a Waikato lake.

Police have recovered a body from a vehicle that was found submerged in a Waikato lake and have not ruled out foul play.

The ute was pulled out of Lake Arapuni by a crane on Thursday morning and belongs to Kim Richmond, who suddenly disappeared from her home on July 31 last year.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Patterson told reporters the identity of the body had not been confirmed yet.

"The Ford Territory has been salvaged and will be taken away for a forensic examination," he said.

"The post-mortem will assist us to identify who that person is and the matter has been referred to the coroner."

He would not be drawn on what had led police to search the lake and has not ruled out foul play being responsible for the death.

"One of our staff has been to see [Ms Richmond's] family and advised them of our findings," he said.
