An elderly man is in a stable condition in Southland hospital after being stabbed in Mataura, while police are asking the public for information on his attacker.
Around 10pm on Saturday a man entered the Main Street house and demanded money, police say.
The victim, aged in his 70s, was stabbed in the chest when he said he didn't have any cash.
The offender fled towards the railway station.
"We're keeping an open mind as to where the offender may have come from, and where he may have gone afterwards, so any information will be welcomed by the investigation team," Detective Sergeant Greg Baird says.
The attacker was described as being 178cm tall, unshaven, of average build, and was wearing a grey hoodie and dark pants.
