Lame Tahs to get Super final lesson

NSW Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson will conduct a wide-ranging review of his Super Rugby team in a bid to improve their fortunes in 2018.

Coach Daryl Gibson will get his underachieving NSW Waratahs watching the Super Rugby final to see just how much they need to improve after a disastrous 2017 campaign.

Gibson on Monday promised there would be a sweeping review of the season, while saying the Tahs board had been incredibly supportive of him despite the team's poor results.

He stressed he wanted to put pride back in the jersey and expected hungrier players after such a disappointing season.

Gibson made it clear the Waratahs wouldn't take much of a break after a campaign which gleaned just four wins from 15 games.

"We'll be starting pretty shortly that planning for next season in terms of the 2018 team," Gibson said on Monday.

"We plan to get them together in two weeks' time to watch the final and to really see what else we have to do to transform ourselves, and see those two teams that are in the final.

"The sooner we start the sooner we can get on doing stuff."

"Most of our roster is in place now, I don't see any reason why we should wait till January till the pre-season starts."

One spot Gibson is keen to fill is that of outside centre with Rob Horne heading to English club Northampton.

"With (Jake) Gordon, (Nick) Phipps, (Bernard) Foley and (Kurtley) Beale we've got a nice inside combination. It's finding that outside centre," Gibson said.

He suggested the Waratahs might wait to see which Super Rugby team was culled, as he said both the Force and Rebels had some excellent centres.

The Tahs conceded their most points ever in a Super season and Gibson will assume responsibility for defence next season.

"I'm going to take my time looking through all the data and see what the best approach is for our team," he said..

He hinted at a smaller leadership group, but stressed captain Michael Hooper had led from the front all year.

"We are striving to create four of five really strong seniors leaders." Gibson said.

He said Beale would add creativity when he returns next season after missing the current campaign because he was playing at English club Wasps.

"I'm looking forward to getting back to the Tahs and helping these young kids," Beale said on Monday.
