    Fresh push to restore power to 1300 homes

    Electricity supplier Powerco says a fresh push is on to reconnect about 1300 customers in the central North Island without power since last week.


    A push is on to reconnect about 1300 customers in the central North Island, who have been without power since last week, lines company Powerco says.

    Manawatu and Whanganui region customers lost power when high winds and heavy snow falls caused an estimated $2 million damage to Powerco's supply network last week.

    At the peak of the storm, power was cut to the 10,000 homes and some people have been without electricity for nearly six days.

    Network operations manager Phil Marsh says more workers and resources are being thrown into action in a bid to get customers in the Taihape, Waiouru and Mangaweka regions connected by Thursday.

    "It will depend on the weather but our contractors have the equipment and staff available to make a big impact on numbers still without power," he said.

    He said progress had been hampered on Monday when helicopter reconnaissance revealed even greater damage to Powerco's network than first thought.

    Managing worker safety was also a major concern when undertaking the speedy repairs, he said.

    Meanwhile, the MetService is forecasting more rain for the country from Thursday.

    Westland is forecast to cop the brunt of the heavy falls in the South Island, although Fiordland, Buller and the Nelson ranges could also be hit.

    The eastern Bay of Plenty is expected to receive heavy rain on Thursday and early Friday.
