    Japanese garden back in bloom in Auckland

    A Japanese garden marking Auckland's sister-city relationship with Fukuoka has reopened, three years after closing to controversy.


    A Japanese garden, the closure of which led to an apology from the then mayor of Auckland, has reopened near its original location.

    The restored Fukuoka Garden has been unveiled in Western Springs Lakeside Park.

    Mayor Phil Goff says Auckland Council has worked closely with Japanese sister-city Fukuoka to re-establish the garden in its new home.

    He says the garden represents the strong bond between the cities for more than 30 years.

    The original garden was gifted by Fukuoka after the signing of the sister-city agreement in 1986.

    It was built in Auckland Zoo, but was removed in 2014 to make way for a Tasmanian devil exhibition.

    The closure proved controversial and then mayor Len Brown apologised to the city of Fukuoka.

    The new garden is 2.6 times larger than the original and entry is free. It has a tea pavilion, waterfall and pond and more than 1800 plants.
