Bodies of men missing in Tongariro found

The bodies of two men missing in rugged bush in the central North Island have been found nearly a month after they fled from police.

The bodies of two men missing in Tongariro National Park after fleeing from police nearly a month ago have been found.

The men, in their 20s, had been missing since August 12, when they allegedly fled from police in a stolen car on State Highway 1 and went into the central North Island bush.

"It is important that we have been able to bring the men back to their whanau to provide them with a sense of closure at this difficult time," says Senior Constable Barry Shepherd.

The deaths will be referred to the coroner.

There had been an extensive search for the men.
