Police name four dead in Taupo crash

Police have released the names of the four people - including a five-year-old boy - who died in a crash near Taupo on Tuesday.

Police have named the four people who died in a crash on State Highway 1 near Taupo on Tuesday.

The head-on collision between two people-movers just south of Tutukau Road killed Mele Ilisapi Oliveti, 44, a Tongan national living in Palmerston North; Helena Adele Paul, 56, of Kaikohe; Leighton Phillip Ahuriri, 60, a New Zealander residing in Western Australia; and Hone Te Ahurei Hawkins-Kanuta, 5, of Kaikohe.

Eight others were injured in the crash.

Police have said Ms Oliveti was in one vehicle while the other three were in the other.

The investigation into the cause of the crash was ongoing, but police say neither speed or alcohol was a factor.

NZME reported the accident involved a Tongan church group returning to Palmerston North following an event in Auckland.

A police spokeswoman said it was important to thank those who assisted at the crash scene, as well as witnesses who have spoken to police since.

The national road toll for the year stands at 296, which is 44 greater than at the same time in 2016.
