NRL to take games to seven country centres

Mudgee, Tamworth, Bathurst, Gosford, Gladstone, Toowoomba and Cairns will all host NRL games next season.

    - article from www.rugbyleague.co.nz

Country Rugby League boss Terry Quinn has praised the NRL for delivering an unprecedented seven matches next season to the bush.

NSW country centres Mudgee, Tamworth, Bathurst, Gosford will all host games in the 2018 season, as will Gladstone, Toowoomba and Cairns in the sunshine state.

South Sydney will play in Cairns, while Gold Coast head to the other two Queensland areas.

The Rabbitohs bring their traditional Charity Shield match to Mudgee against St George Illawarra, who will also host a game in the central western NSW town.

The Wests Tigers will go to Tamworth, Penrith will continue their relationship with Bathurst, while the Sydney Roosters and the Rabbitohs will host rivals in Gosford.

The games follow this year's controversial demise of the City-Country fixture.

"We always said that, if the Country v City match was to be discontinued, we needed to see more NRL games in regional areas," Quinn said.

"We have secured those extra matches and it means fans will be able to see NRL games in more regional areas than ever before."

NRL boss Todd Greenberg said the governing body wanted to take more games to the bush.

"We have said for some time it was our strong desire to take more games to regional venues in 2018, and we're extremely happy to have been able to do that as part of the new schedule," he said.

"I want to thank the clubs involved for working with us on delivering this positive result for the game in regional areas, but also the local councils, community groups and our government partners for being so enthusiastic about hosting rugby league matches."

The full NRL schedule will be released later this year.
