Snow in the south but warm in the north

There'll be snow on some mountain roads in the South island but the last weekend of the school holidays will be fine in parts of the North Island.

It''s spring but wintry conditions prevail with snow forecast in parts of the south of the South Island.

MetService says a brief period of snow is likely near the summit of Crown Range Road on Saturday evening, but it won't settle.

Between 2cm to 5cm of snow could accumulate on Milford Road near the tunnel between 3pm and 9pm on Saturday, with lesser amounts down to 800m.

Overall though there's good news for the last weekend of the school holidays, with some decent weather predicted for the Bay of Plenty and the East Coast of the North Island.

However, there is some wetter weather on the West Coast on Saturday and showers are set to develop over parts of Southland, Otago and Canterbury.

A cold front moves over southern New Zealand on Sunday, then weakens as it crosses the remainder of the country during Monday.

This will deliver heavy westerly rain to the west of the South Island, and strong west to southwesterlies to many places on Sunday and Monday.
