Goff in London to look at infrastructure

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff is having a look at how London has built and funded its major infrastructure projects.

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff is in London to see how its transport has been designed and funded.

His itinerary includes several discussions with people involved in private-public partnerships and he'll also be looking at how London has used congestion charges.

He has meetings on Monday and Tuesday (UK time) before heading off to attend a mayoral conference in Paris with former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

In London, he's meeting the incoming Lord Mayor of the City of London, William Russell, and Commissioner for Transport Mike Brown.

Business leaders he's meeting include Sir Terry Morgan, chairman of Crossrail Limited, Sir Nicolas Grimshaw, chairman of Grimshaw Architects and Keith Howells, chairman of Mott McDonald, who are involved in a number of Auckland infrastructure projects.

"There is much Auckland can learn from how London has funded investment in infrastructure and public transport, and managed growth," Mr Goff said before leaving.

Topics to be discussed include using property value uplift to fund new public transport infrastructure, particularly at London's Crossrail project, and attracting onshore and offshore investment into housing and transport infrastructure.

He's also talking to people about how to run major infrastructure construction projects without bringing a city to a standstill.
