Police have charged two youths after a petrol station fight in Motueka over the weekend left a 29-year-old man with serious head injuries.

Two youths have been charged after a brawl at a South Island petrol station left a man in hospital with serious head injuries.

Police say the fight between two groups broke out early on Sunday morning at the Z service station on Motueka's High Street.

A 29-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious head injuries but is now in a stable condition and expected to make a full recovery, Detective Sergeant Lex Bruning says.

A 15-year-old female and 16-year-old male facing assault charges will appear in Nelson Youth Court on Wednesday.
