Pink says she's spent her "entire life" fighting prejudice

The 38-year-old singer was recently lambasted for appearing to defend outspoken US President Donald Trump on Twitter, suggesting his opinions on contentious issues could evolve during the course of his Presidency, and Pink has admitted to being heartbroken by the reaction of some social media users.

She confessed: "This part has been ... just from the Twitter, just from the misunderstanding of that, that actually broke my heart. I cried a lot about that. I'm really sad about where we are as people.

"And it's always been very hard for me to tolerate injustice and inequality and racism and homophobia and sexism and all these things.

I've been fighting my entire life against it.

"And to be misunderstood that way, it just - it broke my heart. And we're all so defensive."

The 'What About Us' hitmaker - whose real name is Alecia Moore - said the incident served to underline the divisions within American society.

Pink claimed, too, that in spite of the criticism she received, she still believes everyone has the ability to change.

Speaking on National Public Radio in America, the musician explained:

"We're all so divided that we can no longer communicate. And that tweet, in particular, was ... I have seen people come back from heroin addiction. I've seen people come back from alcoholism and the worst kind of alcoholism. I've seen people that were abusive stop being abusive. I've seen change.

"And I have to believe that change is possible because if I stop believing that, then it's just a little too much for me."

The initial controversy stemmed from Pink's tweet on October 10, which

read: "I've seen people change and turn their lives around. There's still hope for you @POTUS. It's what the world needs. (sic)"
