Kit Harington is glad 'Game of Thrones' is coming to an end because he's ready to explore other projects

The 30-year-old actor has played Jon Snow in the HBO fantasy drama - based on George R. R. Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Fire' novels - since its launch in 2011, and he thinks that after eight years the time is right for it to finish in 2019 with the airing of Series 8.

Speaking to Digital Spy, he admitted: "'It will be liberating, just the thought of having a whole year free - you shoot for six months, but half of the projects you might want to do will have started shooting before that six months is over. There's a lot of things you can't do. I'm looking forward to finishing, and eight years is the right amount of time. I wouldn't want it to go on any longer than it has. I have other ideas I'd like to look at producing."

Kit will be seen on the small screen in BBC One drama 'Gunpower', which he co-produced and developed as well as starring as Robert Catesby.

His work behind the scenes on the mini-series - based on the real-life Gunpower Plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London in 1605 - has been a new experience for the actor, and he revealed he is looking forward to more opportunities behind the camera.

Kit said: "I've learned working with the 'Thrones' producers what the job involve... I found the producing side of Gunpowder fascinating, I would like to do more of it. I've found it's opened up a different side of my creative brain, which I've really enjoyed."

Away from his career Kit is preparing for a wedding after asking his 'Game of Thrones' co-star co-star Rose Leslie - who played Ygritte in the TV series - to marry him.

The loved up couple confirmed their engagement with a formal announcement in births, deaths and marriages section of The Times newspaper.

The note read: "The engagement is announced between Kit, younger son of David and Deborah Harington of Worcestershire, and Rose, middle daughter of Sebastian and Candy Leslie of Aberdeenshire."
