Search for West Coast fisherman ends

The search for a second fisherman missing since the boat he was on sank on the West Coast last month has been called off with no success.

The search for a fisherman missing since the boat he was on sank on the West Coast has been called off.

Police say divers have been unable to find the body of Kieran Lynch, who has not been seen since the Wendy J sank near Smoothwater Bay, at Haast last month.

On Friday, the search was officially called off.

Police divers this week searched the entrance to the bay and good weather allowed them to clear the wreckage and its surrounds on Thursday.

"Unfortunately, Mr Lynch's body was not found."

Police say they will consider resuming the search if new information emerges.

Mr Lynch was with the boat's skipper, Mark Thomas, and fellow fishermen Jay Cairney when they ran into trouble on September 14.

Mr Cairney's body was located at the wreckage, while Mr Thomas was found alive on a nearby beach after the alarm was raised.

The wreck is resting at a depth of about 25 metres.
