    Four people fall from balcony at hotel

    Four people are injured after a balcony collapsed at the Portage Resort Hotel in the Marlborough Sounds.


    Four people are injured, one seriously, after a balcony collapsed at a Marlborough Sounds hotel.

    The accident happened at the Portage Resort Hotel about 6.50pm on Friday, a police spokeswoman says.

    They fell about four metres.

    Three people, one with serious and two with moderate injuries, were airlifted to Nelson Hospital.

    A fourth was taken by the Coastguard to Picton and then transported to Wairau Hospital in an ambulance, the spokeswoman said.

    The four are all local men, aged between 59 and 89, Fairfax reports. They were on the deck adjoining the restaurant and the railing gave way.

    The hotel is about 15 minutes from Picton by boat or 75 minutes by road.
