Man arrested over Greymouth shooting death

West Coast police investigating the shooting death of a woman in Greymouth have arrested a man on a marae at Hokitika.

A man has been arrested over the shooting death of a woman in the West Coast town of Greymouth.

Hayley Williams, 43, was killed at a house in Marsden Road on Sunday afternoon.

Inspector Mel Aitken, West Coast area commander, says the man was found at Arahura marae, north of Hokitika, just before 3pm on Monday and gave himself up peacefully.

She says no one else is being sought over the shooting.

"We have had patrols and staff working tirelessly to make sure that our community is safe," she said.

"Now that we have our offender apprehended, I'm quite confident to say that is the case and people can go about their business and not feel afraid in Greymouth community."

Insp Aitken confirmed there were children in the house at the time of the shooting and police were still looking for the weapon.

Investigators were examining the property and nearby residents could expect a continued police presence for the next seven days.

She thanked her investigation team and members of the public who helped locate the man within 24 hours.

Police had earlier said they were seeking a 45-year-old man over the shooting.

They said they had found a vehicle they believed was used to drive two people away from the scene and an associate of the alleged offender was helping them with their inquiries.

Insp Aitken said the shooting had upset many locals and police were supporting the family.
