Outrage at Auck Council comms spending

A leaked review has revealed Auckland Council is spending about $46 million per year on communications staff.

There is outrage that Auckland Council is spending $46 million a year on communications staff but the council says it has the matter in hand and the figure is more than just salaries.

The Weekend Herald reported Auckland ratepayers are picking up a $45.6 million tab to run communication departments, employing 234 staff, at Auckland Council and five council-controlled organisations.

It cited a leaked review which was commissioned by Mayor Phil Goff.

The Auckland Ratepayers' Alliance is calling on Mr Goff to halve spending on communications staff.

A spokesman for the mayor said there are a total of four reviews of a range of council services under way.

The report on the communications and engagement function, as well as the other three reports, will be on the agenda of the finance and performance committee on November 6.

The reports and recommendations will be debated by councillors, the spokesman said.

He said the $46m figure is operation expenditure, of which salary is one part.

Ratepayers' Alliance spokeswoman Jo Holmes is calling for leadership, on the issue and not just "more mayoral spin".

"Mr Goff and the current council were elected more than a year ago on platforms to cut wasteful spending," Ms Holmes said.

"We're calling on Mr Goff to make a commitment, here and now, to cut the $46m bill in half."

"That would show that he is serious about fighting for the region's ratepayers, and not the council's 234 spin doctors."
