Three people have died in two separate rail crossing accidents on Friday night.

Two people died after being struck by a southbound train at a railway crossing on Boundary Road in Papakura in Auckland about 11pm on Friday.

The Disaster Victim Identification unit was recovering the bodies and the duo had yet to be identified.

About 9.30pm on Friday, a female pedestrian died after being hit by a train in the Christchurch suburb of Hornby.

The accident happened near the level crossing on Parker Street and the woman died at the scene, a police spokeswoman said.
