    Phoenix stopper signs three-year contract

Wellington Phoenix's goalkeeper Keegan Smith has signed a three-year deal with the A-League club.

Keegan Smith has been rewarded for a promising start between the posts for the Wellington Phoenix, earning a three-year contract with the A-League club.

The 18-year-old goalkeeper, who came through the Phoenix academy, has surprised even himself with his quick rise into the pro ranks.

"It's been a whirlwind but I'm just grateful to the coaches and the older boys in the team, they've really been fantastic, giving me little bits of advice," Smith, the youngest 'keeper in the A-League, says.

"It's been a long-time goal of mine [to sign a contract] so I'm delighted to sign given the opportunities I've already had this season, and I'm looking forward to keeping on working."

Phoenix head coach Darije Kalezic says it's a reward for the teenager's calmness and composure.

"He has tremendous self-control, has very sharp reflexes, his vision when in possession is excellent - he has the ability to pick the right pass even under pressure."

The Phoenix next play the Perth Glory in Wellington on Sunday.
