Charges laid after fatal Auckland crash

Police have arrested a man following an investigation into a crash in which two people died while fleeing police in Auckland.

A man has been charged in connection with a car accident in Auckland in which two people died while fleeing police.

The accident occurred at 1am on October 23 on St Lukes Road in Auckland.

The car, carrying five people, crashed into a tree while overtaking and rear seat passengers Connor Talaimanu, 29, and Sharina Storm Meuli, 25, died.

Police had begun chasing the speeding car on the Northwestern Motorway after it had been seen travelling about 130km/h in an 80km/h zone.

The vehicle did not pull over and fled from police before leaving the motorway and crashing.

Police confirmed on Thursday that the 22-year-old driver from Panmure will appear in the Auckland District Court on November 16, charged with two charges of reckless driving causing death and two charges of reckless driving causing injury.

Police are continuing to investigate the crash, as is the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
