Police chase 300 fleeing drivers a month

New Zealand police officers are involved in about 300 fleeing driver incidents a month, the independent watchdog says.

A review of police pursuits shows officers are chasing drivers that refuse to stop about 300 times a month.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority and New Zealand Police are jointly carrying out a review of police pursuits that have taken place in 2017.

"All cases covered by the review are being analysed to identify common themes and issues and identify areas of good practice," IPCA chairman Judge Colin Doherty said on Friday.

"A joint working group is meeting fortnightly to consider the results of that analysis."

    The review began in July.

Most events being reviewed were those that resulted in death or serious harm, the IPCA said.

To bring the numbers into perspective, however, police say fleeing drivers make up about 0.1 per cent of vehicle stops each year.

A police statement said the review would identify areas of good practice for police.

"Drivers who choose to undertake high-risk driving behaviour when failing to stop for police increase the risk to themselves and the public, including the risk of serious injury or fatality.

"A review of all pursuits will enable both organisations [police and IPCA] to develop a better understanding of pursuits and the management of events."

A report on the findings is likely to be made public in late 2018.
