US jail sued over alleged murder by Kiwi

The parents of a man allegedly killed in the San Diego County Central Jail by an aspiring rapper from New Zealand have reportedly claimed against the county.

The parents of a man allegedly killed in a San Diego prison cell by an aspiring rapper from New Zealand have filed a claim against the county, according to local US media.

Aucklander Clinton Thinn, 29, is accused of murdering cellmate Lyle Woodward in the George Bailey Detention Facility, where the Kiwi had been held since a botched bank robbery last year.

Mr Woodward died after being found injured in the cell he was sharing with Thinn and another man in December.

In a claim filed in May this year, Mr Woodward's parents have alleged staff at the San Diego County Central Jail should be held liable for putting their intellectually disabled son in a cell with a known violent offender, according to the San Diego Reader.

If allowed, the claim would allow the family to file a lawsuit for damages.

Thinn - the step-brother of former cabinet minister Nikki Kaye - was in jail after he allegedly tried to rob a bank in San Diego, armed with a hammer and a flare gun in June last year.

He is due to appear again in court next week with a trial set down later this month.
