Inquiry into spending by ex-DHB boss

A former top public servant is heading the enquiry into the spending of former Waikato DHB boss Nigel Murray.

An investigation into the alleged wrongful expenditure of taxpayers' money by former Waikato DHB boss Nigel Murray has been re-started.

State services commissioner Peter Hughes announced on Friday that the enquiry would be headed by former acting chief executive of the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority, John Ombler.

Dr Murray quit in October, part-way through an independent inquiry into alleged financial breaches during his tenure, which was not completed.

It is alleged he spent more than the agreed $25,000 allocated for relocation costs to come to the DHB, and carried out other unauthorised spending.

Mr Hughes says Mr Ombler has a reputation for integrity and a thorough understanding of public and financial management.

"I expect to receive [his] report early in the new year," Mr Hughes said.

The enquiry will look at Dr Murray's spending, his conduct, and any decisions made by the DHB during his tenure.

Dr Murray's spending was the scrutiny of media reports this year.

He took leave at the end of July while it was investigated and officially quit on October 5.
