Open day for Christchurch traffic bridge

There's an open day on the new traffic bridge outside Christchurch Airport but booking is essential and only walkers can attend.

Walkers are being allowed on the new bridge at the major traffic intersection outside Christchurch Airport before it opens to traffic.

There's an open day at the Memorial Avenue Gateway Bridge from 10am to 2pm on Saturday.

Walkers have to book a free ticket online to attend and no bikes, scooters, skateboards or pets are allowed. That's because there's limited space on the bridge.

"People will be able to stand underneath the 27m tall gateway arches, take photographs and check out the view," says New Zealand Transport Agency project manager Chris Collins.

The bridge design was chosen via a competition. It draws on the vertical power of the Southern Alps and the braided rivers of the Canterbury Plains.

The majority of the Russley Road Upgrade is already open to traffic and the bridge will open to traffic during the week starting November 12.

The Russley Road Upgrade is part of the Christchurch Western Corridor which will reduce congestion and improve travel times, provide better walking and cycling connections and boost safety.
