Armistice Day ceremonies in New Zealand

There are ceremonies in NZ on Saturday for Armistice Day and the All Blacks will wear a poppy on the sleeve of their jerseys.

The All Blacks will wear the RSA's New Zealand poppy on the sleeve of their jerseys when they take the field on Armistice Day against France in Paris.

On the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, in the year 1918, the guns fell silent and the First World War ended.

There are ceremonies at the Auckland War Memorial Museum and Pukeahu National War Memorial in Wellington from 10.30am on Saturday and at other locations around the country.

Opposition leader Bill English is among those attending the Wellington ceremony.

The "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" has become universally associated with the remembrance of those who died in World War I and two minutes' silence is observed.

On Thursday the All Blacks attended a wreath-laying ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris to commemorate the fallen soldiers of World War I.

All Blacks lock Sam Whitelock shared a story of his grandfather's fight to make the All Blacks after sustaining shrapnel injuries while serving.
