Yachts facing strict checks this summer

The 500 international yachts expected to visit New Zealand this summer will face increase biosecurity checks, the Ministry for Primary Industries says.

The Ministry for Primary Industries are ramping up biosecurity checks in Northland in anticipation for the 500 international yachts expected to stop in this summer.

MPI has teamed up with Customs and the New Zealand Defence Force to target the Northland area which is the arrival point for most international yachts visiting New Zealand.

"Our main objective is to stop fruit fly entering New Zealand. But there are everyday items carried by vessels that have biosecurity risks, including various foods carried in the stores," MPI Team Manger for North Ports James Reed says.

"We even come across live animals from time to time," he said.

The NZDF would be surveying the area from the sky to identify any incoming yachts that often illegally sought shelter in local coastal bays.

Small craft that were intending to enter New Zealand had to submit an advanced notice of where they would be arriving and details about the vessel and crew.
