    Dunedin eyes waterfront transformation

    Plans have been unveiled for Dunedin's waterfront, which would transform the industrial site into a pedestrian-friendly destination.


    Dunedin's waterfront could be unrecognisable in a few decades if unveiled development plans are adopted.

    Local architect Damien van Brandenburg has come up with a 25-year vision for Steamer Basin, just south of the Octagon, which is currently an industrial area.

    The most striking feature is upright "clams", reminiscent of the Sydney Opera House, jutting out into the harbour.

    A convention centre is envisioned for the waterfront as well as marine education centre in the shape of a whale's tail in the pedestrian-friendly area.

    A pedestrian and cycling bridge would connect it to the central city and Dunedin City Counci says the bridge options will be discussed with the community as part of the upcoming 10-year plan.

    The Otago Regional Council, Port Otago, the University of Otago and Ngai Tahu have also been working on the waterfront plans.
