Ardern has first face-to-face with Trump

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has met US President Donald Trump for the first time face-to-face.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has met US President Donald Trump.

The leaders were introduced by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the APEC gala dinner in Da Nang, Vietnam, on Friday night (local time).

Ms Ardern shook hands with Mr Trump and, while he's known for his uncomfortably long handshakes, she described it as "standard".

The conversation with Mr Trump included Mr Trudeau and Chilean President Michelle Bachelet.

"It wasn't particularly political, it was about APEC and the programme," she said.

At the dinner, Ms Ardern was seated next to Myanmar's leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, and briefly discussed the humanitarian crisis and persecution of Rohingya in that country.

"I did talk about the nature of her constitution and the relationship with the military," she said.

"I think from the conversation she certainly from the sentiment would have taken my interest in the constitutional arrangement between her and the military."

Ms Ardern has also briefly said hello to Russian President Vladimir Putin in passing.

Foreign Minister Winston Peters has met with Mr Putin on this trip but said the discussions in that meeting were private.
