    Short list of five for America's Cup bases

    Auckland Council is due to make a decision next week on the location of the teams' bases for the next America's Cup sailing regatta.

    The location of the sailing syndicates' bases when Team New Zealand defends the America's Cup in 2021 is expected to be known next week.

    Auckland Council's Governing Body has been presented with five infrastructure options in the city's downtown area for hosting the sport's biggest event.

    Council chief executive Stephen Town says a decision is needed when councillors meet on November 23 so resource consent can be lodged in January.

    "The main America's Cup races are likely to be held from January to March 2021," he said.

    "To meet the event's time-frames and the anticipated arrival of syndicates, construction needs to be substantially complete by mid to late 2019."

    The council has been working with Team NZ and central government on infrastructure requirements since the syndicate won back the Auld Mug in Bermuda in June.

    The five options are based on ability to deliver in the time-frame, team and event requirements, and providing a legacy for the city and country.

    Mr Town said the indicative costs for the options ranged from $140 million to $190 million.

    He said the funding would be included in the council's Long-term Plan on the basis that a package would need to be negotiated, sharing costs between the council, the government and private sector investors.

    The government was understood to be considering its involvement in December, with decisions announced in early 2018.

    America's Cup base options in Auckland:

    - Halsey Wharf extension;

    - Captain Cook West;

    - Captain Cook East;

    - Dispersed option across Halsey Wharf and Westhaven Marina;

    - Dispersed option across Halsey Wharf, Hobson Wharf and Wynyard Point East.
