    Missing Wellington diver's body found

A three-day search for a missing man has ended with the body of the diver found off Wellington's west coast.

The body of a missing diver has been found off the coast of Makara in Wellington.

The search for the 24-year-old New Plymouth man had been on-going since Monday evening after he failed to contact his family.

He was expected out of the water by 4pm that day but when no contact was made by 7.15pm a helicopter and search and rescue team were dispatched.

Police located the diver's spear gun and catch bag on Tuesday and Inspector Neil Banks was at the time, hopeful the man would be found alive.

"Police would like to thank all involved, especially volunteer Coastguard units, Surf Life Saving and Wellington LandSAR for their efforts in the search," Senior Sergeant David Houston said on Wednesday evening.

"This is an incredibly sad time for the man's family and friends and we are thankful to be able to bring them some form of closure."

The man's death will be referred to the coroner.
