Police seize $50m of meth in Christchurch

Christchurch police have seized 49 kilograms of methamphetamine hidden in safety lights flown in from Mexico. It's the South Island's biggest ever seizure.

Christchurch police have seized $50 million worth of meth flown in from Mexico in the South Island's biggest-ever haul.

Police say the 49 kilograms of the class A drug was found in 40 packages hidden inside safety lights, which arrived by airfreight at the start of November.

Two Christchurch men, aged 25 and 31, were arrested as part of a two-week joint operation with customs and charged with importation and possession of methamphetamine for supply, police said.

Both appeared in the district court on Wednesday and will reappear on November 20.

Officers also searched a number of addresses in Christchurch and Auckland.

"This seizure was the result of risk-profiling and targeting work that Customs carries out for all goods, people and craft coming into New Zealand," Customs southern ports manager Joe Cannon said.

Police say the additional harm of the drugs to the community is estimated to be about $60m.

Detective Inspector Corrie Parnell called it a "significant result".

"These drugs, should they have made it to the streets, would have caused significant harm to people and communities, not just in Canterbury, but across the country," he said.
