NZ MPs welcome gay marriage vote

Parliament's cross-party Rainbow Network has welcomed the strong vote in favour of gay marriage in Australia.

The New Zealand parliament's cross-party Rainbow Network has welcomed the strong vote in favour of gay marriage in Australia.

The result of the survey, announced on Wednesday, was 61.6 per cent in favour and 38.4 per cent opposed.

The turnout was nearly 80 per cent.

"Congratulations Australia, the mandate for change is overwhelming," network co-chairs Louisa Wall, Jan Logie, Chris Bishop and David Seymour said in a statement.

"New Zealand legislated for marriage equality in 2013 and since then thousands of gay couples have shown their love for their partners by getting married."
