    Minister can't guarantee school staffing

Education Minister Chris Hipkins says he can't guarantee schools will be able to recruit enough teachers to fully staff classrooms next year.

Education Minister Chris Hipkins has told parliament he isn't confident he'll be able to recruit enough teachers to fully staff classrooms next year.

"Student numbers are increasing, the number of teacher trainees completing their training has been declining," he said.

"An increasing number of teachers are nearing retirement age, some schools are already advising that they are getting no applications for the jobs they are advertising."

Mr Hipkins said he had developed an urgent package of measures which he would take to cabinet soon.

The minister had been asked during question time whether he was confident schools would be fully staffed next year.

"Regrettably no, I'm not at this point," he replied.
