Tim McGraw carried a knife and was covered in blood when he first met his daughter's boyfriend

The 50-year-old country music star has three daughters - Audrey, 15, Maggie, 19, and Gracie, 20 - with his wife Faith Hill, and when his eldest girl went on her first date, Tim made sure he did a background check on the guy and asked for him to come round the next morning

But the date was in for a shock after the 'Humble and Kind' hitmaker forgot he was coming round and was preparing for a barbecue so was covered in "chunks of meat" and had "blood everywhere" when he opened the door.

Speaking on the 'Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon', Tim said: "We put our secret service guys on it, they checked it out, everything's good.

"The next morning we're doing a barbecue. I'm in the kitchen and I forget that he's coming. I have a white apron on and a knife and I'm trimming meat up, so I've got chunks of meat all over this apron, blood everywhere.

"The doorbell rings and I go and answer the door. I've got a knife in my hand and bloody apron on and it worked out really well."

Tim met his spouse and fellow country music star back in 1994 and admitted on the show he was "smitten right away" but had to work to get his wife to reciprocate the feelings.

He said: "The first time we met was in 1994 at the CRS, the Country Radio Seminar, I remember very vividly, it was a New Faces show and we were backstage and we all took a picture, a lot of new artist. Clay Walker was in there and a lot of other artists.

"And yeah that was the first time I met Faith. I had a mullet and wearing a suede jacket. And I was smitten right away.

"No she didn't fall in love with me right away. It took a lot of time."

But his spouse, who also joined her husband on the show, quipped that it "wasn't that long" until she fell in love with him.
