The man who died in the water at Maori Bay, on Auckland's west coast near Muriwai, on Friday was Indian national Akhil Tangri, police say

Police have released the name of the man who drowned at Maori Bay, near Muriwai, on Auckland's west coast.

He was 21-year-old Akhil Tangri, an Indian national who had been in New Zealand for several months.

He was found dead in the water on Friday afternoon.

The death will be referred to the coroner.

Mr Tnagri was from Ludhiana city in Punjab and had come to New Zealand as a student in July, The Indian Weekender reports.

He was out with two friends to celebrate the one of their birthdays. After playing paintball they decided to go to Muriwai beach to swim.
