Threats against mayor over water crisis

A threat has been made online against Napier's mayor as the city suffered a water crisis.

Napier's mayor Bill Dalton has received online criticism after an announcement water use in the city would be restricted, including a threat to burn down his house.

The announcement that reservoir levels in the area were critically low earlier this week was not received well, with abuse being directed at Mr Dalton and other council staff.

On Tuesday, Mrs Dalton's wife Shirley wrote on the 24,000-member Napier News Facebook page that someone suggested "setting fire to our house and watch it burn chanting 'sorry no water',".

"Bill has worked very hard today and with the support of the good citizens of Napier the crisis is behind us," she wrote.

Mrs Dalton told NZME she hoped what was said was nothing more than an idle threat. It had been deleted not long after being posted.

A police spokeswoman told NZ Newswire Mr Dalton had spoken to police on Wednesday and said he did not want to make a formal complaint.
