A 13-year-old boy missing in Dunedin since Thursday has been found safe, police say.

Police, search crews and dogs spent the night looking for Matthew Gershom in the Ross Creek area after he went missing from Glenleith about 5pm.

They had earlier only managed to find his shoes, but about 8am on Friday said he had been located "safe and well".
