Heavy rain floods Bay of Plenty roads

The MetService has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Bay of Plenty and police have advised motorists to limit their travel.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of the eastern North Island as heavy rain causes surface flooding in Tauranga and Rotorua.

The Metservice's warning on Monday night is for Hauraki, western Bay of Plenty and Tauranga.

It says the thunderstorms are moving north-north-west and are expected to be accompanied by torrential rain.

Police are asking motorists to limit their travel if possible.

They say there is surface flooding in Tauranga, including in Cameron Road, Fraser Street and Eleventh Avenue through to Fifteenth Avenue and to Greerton.

In Rotorua, Te Ngae Road, which is part of State Highway 30, is also flooded.
