    Council confirms $10m cathedral grant

Christchurch City Council has agreed to pay $10 million towards the reinstatement of the Christ Church Cathedral, which was damaged in the 2011 earthquake.

The Christ Church Cathedral is one step closer to being reinstated after Christchurch City Council confirmed it will put up $10 million towards repairs.

The grant is a significant sum, but also an investment into the heart and soul of the Garden City, Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel says.

In July, council agreed in principle to give a $10m grant towards the costs of reinstating the Cathedral, but it made its contribution subject to consultation with the community.

"Our consultation was not about whether or not the Cathedral should be reinstated. It was solely about whether it was appropriate for the city to commit funds to the project," Ms Dalziel said.

The money will be funded through a targeted rate over a fixed period of time, which is likely to be about $12 a year, per property, for six years.

The Anglican Synod took a vote in September and agreed to reinstate the Cathedral as the centrepiece of the city.

The reinstatement option includes monetary support from the government, council and a pledge from Great Christchurch Buildings Trust.

It's believed the reinstatement will cost about $104m.

The Cathedral was severely damaged nearly seven years ago, when a 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit the city on February 22, 2011.
