Some Wellingtonians will soon be able to charge their electric vehicles near where they live.
Wellington City Council says it has launched the application phase of a national-first programme - trialling charging points in residential streets.
Councillor David Lee says that, for the one in four residents without off-street parking in the capital, owning an electric vehicle is largely impossible because of the need to charge overnight.
He says there are fast chargers around the central city, and the council is looking at installing more, but EV users need to be able to charge at home as well.
"The adoption of electric vehicles in Wellington has been limited up to now," he said.
"This is not because people don't want to make the change - we know they do. It's because off-street parking here is not a given."
Under the project, there will be up to 25 medium-speed charge stations in residential areas, with each charger able to charge two cars at once.
Residents who want to register interest should contact the council and Mr Lee has encouraged joint applications from two or more people in the same street.
The council and partners will cover the cost of the trial, while users will pay the maintenance and electricity costs.
