A female driver has died in a three car pile-up at Hamurana, near Rotorua, on Sunday night, which also left two others seriously injured.

A female driver has died in a three car pile-up near Rotorua.

The crash occurred in Hamurana about 9.15pm on Sunday on State Highway 5 and left the driver and passenger of a second car with serious injuries.

The driver of the third car has minor injuries and was taken to Rotorua Hospital along with the two other injured.

State Highway 5 was temporarily closed following the crash but has since reopened.

The death brings the holiday period road toll to five.

Two people also died early on Sunday morning in separate crashes in Hawke's Bay and Hanmer Springs, while two more were killed in separate crashes in Northland and Auckland on Friday.

A motorbike rider also died in the Buller region of the South Island on Sunday but this is not counted towards the official road toll as it occurred on private property.

The holiday road toll period started at 4pm on Friday and will end at 6am on January 4.
